Sand is abrasive, not chemical
Sand doesn't react with gold the way salt or chlorine can build up on a surface — it wears at it mechanically, the same way sandpaper does, just far more slowly. The fix is simple and different from the usual water rinse: don't just brush sand off, rinse it off, ideally with the piece moving under the water so grains actually fall out of the links rather than settling deeper into them.
Sunscreen leaves more film than a normal day does

Gold-filled jewelry left sitting in direct sun — on a towel, in a bag on the sand — can get genuinely hot to the touch after an hour or two, the same as any metal object left in full sun. That's a heat risk to your skin when you put it back on, not a risk to the piece itself; gold-fill isn't affected by beach-level heat in any lasting way. Worth a moment's caution before you slide a ring back on that's been baking on a towel, and a reason to keep pieces you're not wearing in a bag or pouch rather than loose on a towel in direct sun.
The real beach risk is losing it, not damaging it
This is the part that actually costs people jewelry, and it has nothing to do with the metal's durability. Cold ocean water makes fingers contract, which is exactly when a ring that fits perfectly on a warm, dry hand can slip off unnoticed in the surf. Waves, digging in sand, pulling off a rashguard or wetsuit, and tossing a ball around all create moments where a piece can come loose and be genuinely unrecoverable once it's in the water or buried in sand.
A few habits that actually prevent this, more useful than any material fact: take rings off before repeated ocean swims if they run at all loose, rather than betting on the fit holding in cold water; do a clasp check on necklaces, bracelets and anklets before you go in, since a worn or loose clasp is far more likely to fail under the extra movement of swimming than during an ordinary day; and if you're going to be active in the water for a while, a small zip pouch in your bag is worth more than any amount of durability the piece has.
