Huggie vs. Hoop Earrings: What Size Should You Get?

Mondsee 18k gold-filled Cuban chain clicker hoop earrings, available in huggie and small hoop sizes

You want a small gold hoop for every day, but every listing says "huggie" or "hoop" and the millimeter sizes don't tell you much. Here's the short answer: a huggie is a small hoop, usually around 8–12mm, that sits snug against your earlobe; a hoop is anything larger that hangs below the lobe with visible space inside the circle. Which one you want comes down to where your piercing sits, how much movement you like, and whether you'll sleep in them.

What is the difference between huggie and hoop earrings?

Both are circles of metal that pass through your piercing. The difference is scale and fit.

  • Huggies are sized to wrap closely around the lobe, with little or no gap between the earring and your skin. They usually have a thicker tube relative to their size and close with a hinged "clicker" that snaps shut. They read as polished and quiet, and they barely move.
  • Hoops are larger and hang. You see a clear circle of space inside them, and they swing slightly when you turn your head. Closures vary: hinged clickers on smaller hoops, latches on medium sizes, and thin endless wires that thread through the piercing on larger ones.

There's no official cut-off, but most jewelers treat anything under roughly 13mm as a huggie, 13–20mm as a small hoop, and 20mm and up as a classic or statement hoop.

What size huggie earrings should I get?

Huggie fit depends on the distance from your piercing to the bottom edge of your lobe. A huggie that's too small pinches; one that's too large stops "hugging" and starts to dangle.

Size How it fits Best for
8–9.5mm Tight to the lobe, minimal gap Petite lobes, second or third piercings
10–11mm Snug with a sliver of space Most first lobe piercings; the safest everyday size
12–13mm Relaxed, just starting to hang Lower-set piercings or a slightly bolder look

A quick way to check: measure from the center of your piercing straight down to the edge of your lobe. Add 1–2mm to that number and you have a rough minimum inner diameter that will close comfortably. If you're between sizes, size up for comfort, since a huggie that presses on the lobe is the one you'll take out by lunch.

One thing to watch: brands measure differently. Some list the outer diameter, some the inner. A 10mm outer huggie with a 2mm tube has an inner opening closer to 6mm, which is snug on most lobes. When the product page lists tube width, subtract twice the tube width from the outer diameter to get the opening.

What size hoop earrings should I get?

Hoops are about proportion and how much presence you want near your face.

  • 15–20mm: the everyday small hoop. Visible, but still quiet enough for a meeting or a long day on your feet.
  • 25–30mm: the classic gold hoop. It frames the jawline and works with almost anything, from a T-shirt to a slip dress.
  • 40mm and up: a statement. Best in a lightweight or hollow construction so the hoop doesn't pull on the piercing.

Weight matters as much as diameter. A thin 40mm endless hoop can feel lighter than a chunky 20mm tube hoop. If your lobes are sensitive to weight, look for hollow tube construction or a finer wire.

Can you sleep in huggie earrings?

This is where huggies earn their place. Because they sit close to the lobe and have no dangling parts, many people sleep in a small, smooth huggie without noticing it. Larger hoops are a different story: they can catch on pillowcases and hair, and the pressure of lying on a big hoop is uncomfortable for most.

If you plan to keep a pair in around the clock, choose a smooth, closed clicker huggie in the 9–11mm range and make sure the hinge clicks fully shut. For showering and swimming in the same pair, read our guide to water and gold-filled jewelry first. And for necklaces, rings and bracelets, see can you sleep in gold-filled jewelry?

Are huggies or hoops better for sensitive ears?

Size isn't what causes irritation; metal is. A huggie made of plated base metal will bother sensitive ears just as much as a big plated hoop. What matters is the material that touches the piercing: solid gold, gold-filled, or another metal that won't flake or expose a nickel base.

That said, huggies have two small advantages. They put less weight on the piercing, and they move less, so there's less friction. If your ears react easily, a gold-filled huggie is a good place to start. Our buyer's guide for sensitive ears and sensitive skin page go deeper on what to look for.

How do you wear huggies and hoops together?

If you have more than one piercing, the simplest stack uses size to step down the ear:

  1. First hole: your largest piece, either a 15–25mm hoop or a slightly bigger huggie.
  2. Second hole: a 9–11mm huggie, ideally in a different texture, like a pavé or chain-link huggie beside a smooth hoop.
  3. Upper lobe or helix: the smallest huggie you own, or an ear cuff if you don't want another piercing.

Keep everything in the same metal tone and you can mix shapes freely. For more on building a polished everyday look, see what jewelry to wear to work.

Which pieces to start with

If you're building from scratch, two pairs cover almost every day:

  • A smooth or lightly textured huggie (9–11mm) for everyday and sleep. Our 9.5mm Cubic Zirconia Clicker Huggie adds a little light, and the Cuban Chain Clicker Hoops come in 10mm, 15mm and 19mm, so you can choose huggie or small hoop in the same design.
  • A medium hoop (20–30mm) for evenings and days you want more presence. The Croissant Hoops have a twisted tube with real dimension; the Endless Hoop is the fine, seamless classic, from 20mm up.

If you can't decide on a huggie size at all, the Emerald Hoop Trio includes 9mm, 11mm and 13mm huggies, so you can find your fit and wear the others in extra piercings.

The short version

  1. A huggie is a small hoop, roughly 8–12mm, that sits snug against the lobe; a hoop is larger and hangs.
  2. For most first lobe piercings, a 10–11mm huggie is the safest size.
  3. Check whether a listing measures outer or inner diameter, and factor in tube width.
  4. Small hoops sit around 15–20mm; 25–30mm is the classic; 40mm and up is a statement.
  5. Huggies are the easier choice for sleeping and for ears that dislike weight.
  6. Metal matters more than size for sensitive ears. Choose gold-filled or solid gold over plated.
